ID Card

Project Brief

Create a monogram and then design a personal ID card

Design Process

After sketching a couple of variations of the ID card using my initials, TM, I selected the 4 most unique designs. Then, using InDesign, I digitised the monograms. The trick with this stage was finding the correct pre-existent typefaces that could be manipulated to represent my sketches.

Creating an ID card based on the two final monograms helped me narrow down the tone I wanted. For the final version, I wanted to highlight the shapes of the letterforms and include contrasting colours.

Additionally, the shapes in the background of the ID card are letters in my name. After finding the direction of the ID card, it was just a matter of minor altercations to perfect the composition.

Reflection

As my introduction into type design, this project was initially daunting. However, it became easier once I understood the expectations and started formulating my ideas. My current website logo is a variation of the monogram designed in this class, a testament to how happy I was with it.
